This session will cover the basic roles, responsibilities, and practices of nonprofit board governance with topics to include:
• Board Building Cycle
• Legal Duties
• Key Roles and Responsibilities (including Board vs. Staff)
• Board Expectations and Assessment
Putting the learning into practice, we will facilitate a series of small group discussions around current practices and challenges and (because every organization is unique in its structure, character, and culture) help participants understand the best approaches to incorporate for their respective organizations. The session is led by two professionals who have served as the executive of a nonprofit organization, and in the leadership of a variety of nonprofit boards and foundations. Come ready to learn and to share. Executive staff and board leadership are encouraged.
Jamie Kyte Sapoch
Jamie Kyte Sapoch has over 35 years of nonprofit leadership experience at the national, state, and local levels, including as an independent consultant and advisor to The Bunbury Fund. She has spent the last 20 years focused on building effective and sustainable nonprofit organizations.
As Executive Director of The Watershed Institute, she established a five-county volunteer water quality monitoring system, now a respected statewide model. She initiated best practices in board governance, and led the organization through its first capital campaign. During her board leadership of The Bunbury Company, the foundation distributed over $10 million in grants to nonprofits across New Jersey and Vermont. She is a skilled coach in leadership development and an effective organizational strategist. Her consulting work has helped raise over $80 million in capital, operating, and endowment support for a variety of environmental, cultural, and community-based organizations. Additional nonprofit work includes executive transition, governance, and strategic assessment.
She has served as a trustee of The Bunbury Company, Delaware & Raritan Greenway, Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, Windham Foundation, and Hopewell Public Library. She is an advisor to New Jersey Conservation Foundation, The Watershed Institute, David Mathey Fund, and The Bunbury Fund. She is an active trustee at Princeton Area Community Foundation, where she serves as Governance Committee Chair. Her recognitions include Delaware & Raritan Girl Scout Woman of Distinction and Metzger-Conway Fellowship at Dickinson College. She has a BA from Dickinson College, with majors in Fine Arts and American Studies. Jamie lives with her husband in Hopewell, NJ.
Nancy Kieling
Nancy Kieling is the former President and CEO of the Princeton Area Community Foundation of central New Jersey. During her 20 year tenure, she grew the Community Foundation’s assets from $300,000 to $108 million, designed its grant making and scholarship programs, and put the infrastructure in place to support a sustainable and successful nonprofit enterprise. She retired at the end of 2014.
Prior to her time with the Community Foundation, Nancy was a corporate lending officer in the Communications, Entertainment & Publishing Division of the Bank of New York. She was also a regional director in the Office of Undergraduate Admission at Princeton University.
She holds a BA in history and German from the University of Wisconsin, and an MS Ed in Higher Education Administration from Old Dominion University. She served as the secretary of the Princeton Regional Chamber of Commerce, and as Chair of the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers. She is currently the Secretary of the Board of Trustees and chair of the Development Committee of Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. She is also an advisor to The Bunbury Fund of the Princeton Area Community Foundation, which supports capacity building in central NJ nonprofits.
