Measurement and Metrics for Continuous Improvement

Funders ask us to measure our impact, though the idea of measurement can often feel overwhelming, onerous, or irrelevant to our particular work. This workshop will cover why measurement can empower your organization to sharpen its focus, help direct your limited resources, and position your organization to improve. The session aims to convince you that measurement is crucial to your organization’s success, far beyond satisfying funder requirements. It also aims to cover basic topics in measurement. Topics covered will include the following:

  • Why do you need to measure?
  • What kinds of measures are there?
  • How should you choose what to measure?
  • How should you gather data?
  • How should you organize your data?
  • How should you use data to inform problem-solving?
  • What comes next?

Julia Matthews

Julia Matthews, Founder of JM Collaborative, has spent the last 16 years working with mission-driven organizations. She started her career as a middle school teacher in the Bronx and then worked in development before moving into strategy consulting. Julia worked as a consultant at Booz & Company and Columbia University’s Center for Public Research and Leadership and did strategy work for Relay Graduate School of Education. She managed the academic budget for Newark Public Schools before opening her own consulting practice. Julia earned her MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, her MS in teaching from Pace University, and her BA in International Relations from The University of Pennsylvania.

Since establishing JM Collaborative in 2018, Julia has worked closely with Arm in Arm, Brooklyn LAB Charter School, Columbia University’s CPRL, Washington DC’s Office of the State Superintendent, Newark Opportunity Youth Network, The National Center for Learning Disabilities & Understood, The New York City Department of Education, and Chris Cerf’s The Uplands Center.

As an independent consultant, Julia provides the strategic mindset and operational know-how to advise leaders and drive forward urgent projects. Areas of focus include growth strategy, evaluation for continuous improvement, executive coaching, and overseeing key initiatives.
